Key words: english proper names, tell-tale names, pun names, character names, untranslatables, translation neoplasms.

The relevance of our research is based on the growing popularity of the fantasy comedy genre. Since modern readers are more and more interested in foreign literature, translators are faced with the task of creating an adequate translation that will accurately reproduce the personal style and all the elements of a separate universe created by an author, as well as convey the meaning that the author puts in his works to his readers. Since the main feature of Terry Pratchett’s personal style is the use of pun and tell-tale names in his works, thus arises the question of proper translation of this particular vocabulary.

This work is devoted to the study of the culture of English proper names, mostly pun and tell-tale names; and analysis of translation choices for such vocabulary in the works of Russian translators. The dominance of the semantic translation method is determined by extensive use of occasionalism in Pratchett’s works. As for transcription/transliteration or their mixing — the translator uses them if he doesn’t see any meaning behind a particular character name. In some cases, it is possible to talk about the creative component of the translated text, about bringing a translator’s personality to the novel. This individuality does not distort Pratchett’s personal style and his original solutions, which appear in translation.

The purpose of this work is to analyze the linguistic and stylistic specificsof proper names translation techniques in a series of fantasy comedy «Discoworld» from English into Russian.

The paper presents an analysis of the specifics of the interpretation of pun names taking into account difficulties and cases where the translation does not match the original.

The results of the study will help to avoid possible difficulties in the future and find new ways to solve them. This will help to optimize the quality oftranslation, which in turn will lead to an improvement of the quality of the final product.

Key words: non-equivalent lexis, computer video game, translation, Internet-discourse.

The non-equivalent lexis is one of the most common problems arising while translating multimedia video games. The relevance of this study is due to the great popularity of computer video games among contemporaries of different ages and social context. This leads to the need to introduce high-quality and faithful professional translation into Ukrainian, as well as the study, analysis and further development of possible effective models for solving problems in the field of translation and localization of video games. The purpose of the study is to analyze the problems of Ukrainian translation and localization of English-language computer games for the further implementation of universal translation solutions in theoretical and applied aspects at the present stage of development of translation studies.

The analysis of the computer multimedia video games translation aimed at distinguishing the prominent translation tactics has allowed to draw the following conclusions. The most common there has proved to be the tactic of the foreign language coloring preservation, realized chiefly by means of the operation of transliteration, employed to render most terms. Loan translation is most uncommon in Ukrainian translations of computer video games. The chief advantage of the translations under analysis there should be considered their lexical, grammatical and stylistic accuracy with the full rendering of the content. The most common translation strategy there turned out to be the strategy of communicative-equal translation.

The result of the research will allow avoiding possible difficulties in the future and finding out the ways of their solution. This will result in the optimization of the translation quality which in its turn will cause improvement of the final product’s quality and further popularization of computer video games.

Kew words: media discourse, sports commentary, phatic function, instrumentality, dialogicity

New media technologies and social media have further added to and exacerbated the powerful cultural configuration that sport (and) media comprise. Sport should be understood as a complex site with many intersecting and interrelated levels and elements that are mutually self-constituting. Modern research in the field of sports discourse, in particular the problem of analyzing sports commentary as a genre of discourse of sport still remains unresolved. The aim of the study is to establish the constitutive characteristics of tennis commentary as a genre of sports discourse. Live tennis commentary is shown to be an internally complex form of media communication that combines elements of live spoken informal conversation. The typology of sports commentary as a genre of sports discourse is determined by the following constitutive characteristics: phatic function, which includes cognitive and axiological competence, descriptiveness and presentation of utterance, semantic sufficiency and control of semantic redundancy, understanding of the context and speech continuum; instrumentality: communicative influence (suggestion), evaluation and dialogicity: appeal to TV viewers. The communicative behavior of the tennis commentator is characterized by a number of specific functions — moderation, the presence of cognitive and axiological competence, descriptiveness and presentation, manifested in the evaluation / figures of speech.

Key words: meteorological vocabulary, linguistic picture of the world, linguistic and cultural features, grammatical features, concept.

Within the anthropocentric paradigm of modern linguistics there is a steady interest in the human factor in language, which, among other things, is realized through the close attention of researchers to the theory of linguistic pictures of the world, which fully reflects the uniqueness of peoples

Human life and activity are inseparable from nature. Nature is one, but manifests itself in various forms. In the process of learning about nature, man tries to realize both its unity and diversity. A special place in the perception of the world by man is occupied by climatic and weather phenomena that affect human behavior in the world, various aspects of his life, including economic, as well as well-being. In the IV century. BC became aware of the impact of fluctuations in weather conditions on human health. For example, Hippocrates established a close link between human disease and the weather conditions in which he lives. Over the centuries, people have gathered a variety of knowledge about nature: from misunderstanding of natural phenomena, fear of them, inherent in ancient people, to today’s scientific knowledge of nature, from the first folk signs of weather to the formation of modern science — meteorology. Nature as a source of everything necessary for man has an impact on both the material and spiritual culture of society. Therefore, knowledge of meteorological phenomena occupies an important place in the awareness of reality.

The article considers the peculiarities of meteorological vocabulary in Chinese and Ukrainian languages, as well as the peculiarities of meteorological vocabulary translation in two languages.

Key words: translation of fiction, poetry, tropes.

Translation of fiction, and in particular — translation of poetic works plays an extremely important role in modern translation studies. In the process of global more and more people are learning foreign languages and showing a deep interest in the cultural heritage of other countries, including literature. This explains the increased interest of readers in the poetry of foreign authors. The complexity of literary translation is due to the fact that the translator must not only have the basic translation skills, but also must have the creative abilities and background knowledge to fully reproduce all the artistic means that are found in the original text.

The objective of the article is to analyze the reproduction of tropes in translation of the poetic work of E. A. Poe “Dreams” from English into Chinese to identify tactics, techniques and transformations allowing to reproduce artistic means in translation. According to the results of the study, it was found out that in the poetic work “Dreams” the following artistic means were employed: epithet, metaphor, personification, comparison and rhetorical question.

Despite the difference in the mentalities of the English and Chinese people, the translator used the tactic of national coloring preservation while rendering in translation all the above-mentioned artistic means. This tactic made it possible to fully implement the desired emotional impact on the target audience and convey the mood and attitude of the original author. In the five cases out of the twelve, the translator resorted to the transformation of the addition to deepen the emotional impact on the recipient. It may be concluded that the translator hasn’t only achieved the goal but also managed to preserve the main function of the work of art — an aesthetic impact on the reader, and besides successfully re-created eleven of the twelve artistic means at work.

Key words: song translation, translation difficulties, linguistic adaptation, rhyme, rhythm, form, linguistic realities.

The article deals with features and problems of translating texts of English-language songs and ways of translating them into Ukrainian by the blogger UkrTrashDub. With the advent of American culture and its influence on Ukrainian youth, research is becoming increasingly relevant in our time. In the course of a comparative analysis of the original, it was revealed that linguistic realities and reproduction of the form of the original text are the main difficulties in the
perception and translation of songs.

Despite a deep understanding of the ideological and thematic orientation of the original text, the translator must be able to find adequate verbal means and the specifics of the author’s language.

In addition, when translating is a poetic text, it is very important to preserve its rhythmic organization and rhyme system, which, however, is not always possible. Speaking about the ways of translating lyrics, the authors dwell on the rhymed method of translation, focusing on achieving the maximum possible adequacy of the translation. Particular attention is paid to the social factor that motivates the existence of this type of translation. As part of the study, the main
features, problems and means of translating English-language songs into Ukrainian were identified. The main features include: unstable poetic meter; the hugeinfluence of the culture of native speakers of the original text; a large number of the realities of the culture of the native speakers of the original language depicted in the lyrics. The problems of translating lyrics are: preservation of the original form; adaptation and/or transmission of foreign language realities and the difference in languages, which forms the approach to writing poetry. It can be concluded that the main features of the translation of English songs are related to the preservation of the original form.

Key words: chrononym, linguaculture, linguistic picture of the world, nomination, temporal lexical units, luna and solar calendar.

Analysis of linguocultural aspect of temporal nominations is impossible without involving the problems of hrononymic lexics. Chrononyms is an important information resource of a certain linguaculture, some distinctive peculiarities of conceptual picture of the world. The aim of the experimental analysis is a complex examination of the linguacultural aspect of temporal nominations that function in Chinese and Turkish languages reflecting the concepts of the world. The research was based on the material of the novels “Imperial woman” by Pearl Buck and “Roxolana” by Pavlo Zagrebelniy.

The analysis of recent scientific publications allowed us to come to the conclusion that the investigation of hrononymic lexics can involve different theoretical and practical principles.

Being guided by the existing classifications of chrononyms (N. Podolskaya, M. Torchinsky, S. Remmer) the linguocultural features of the following types of temporal chrononymic lexical units were identified and studied in the research: georthonyms, dynastic chrononyms, tumultonyms, parsonyms and mensonyms.

The results of the research demonstrate that not all lexical units of temporal denotation chosen from the above mentioned novels refer to the class of chrononyms. The group under investigation includes the following lexemes: nominations of the lunar calendar, nominations of the solar calendar, nominations of mixed calendar and temporal slots denoting day and night.

The basic system of chronology in the linguiacultures under analysis is the dominance of the lunar calendar nominations (Chinese picture of the world — 51,0 %, Turkish — 40,4 %). In the analyzed works the nominations of the solar calendar are used less often in the Chinese picture of the world; the usage of this unit reaches 20 %, and this phenomenon is historically conditioned. Mixed calendar nominations (21 % of temporal units) are rather common, solar calendar nominations are refined by the monthly calendar; it can be explained by the fact that the Chinese mind is conservative towards the new temporal system. In the Turkish picture of the world 45 % of temporal vocabulary belongs to the solar calendar since in the sixteenth century only a lunar calendar operated in the Ottoman Empire. It should be mentioned that significant place in the temporal vocabulary of “Roxolana” is conditioned by the influence of the linguistic personality of the author, who was a Ukrainian.

Key words: official business style, international organization, regulatory document, linguistic and cultural features, grammatical differences.

The article is devoted to the study of the linguistic characteristics of official business style documents in English and Chinese. The relevance of the topic is explained by the growing pace of globalization, which requires the correct and accurate formation of international documents. The study is based on a comparison of stylistic and grammatical characteristics and rules for the composition of the text of an official business document, in particular declarations, conventions and resolutions in both languages. Consideration of the concepts of an international organization, an international document, a regulatory agreement, etc., allowed the exploration of the essence and importance of such institutions as the UN and UNESCO, which directly create the declarations, conventions and resolutions that are considered in the article. A review of existing studies on the functional styles of both languages revealed the features of the formation of the official business style of the English and Chinese languages, and their influence on the features of the formation of official business documents. Familiarization with the latest work of scientists has allowed us to obtain more accurate and relevant research results. The purpose, aim and basic features of the regulatory documents of the Chinese and English languages do not differ, however, certain speech differences are traced. The main differences of the Chinese official business style are explained by the influence of the linguistic and cultural features of this language, which include morphological features, rules for loan words formation in the Chinese language, and some grammatical features that are presented in the article. The main reason for the changes and the formation of the modern official business language was the transition from Wenyang to Baihua, but with the preservation of a significant number of Wenyang clericalism. The article presents and analyzes examples of the English and Chinese parts of documents, which made it possible to conduct a quantitative analysis and generalize the features of documents of both languages at the syntactic level in the form of a table.

Key words: phonetic, phonology, syntagmatics, paradigmatics, types of syllables, word stress, intonation.

The article is dedicated to the study of the current state of segmental and suprasegmental phonetics and phonology of the Ukrainian language reviewed from the recent comparative investigations. In the focus of the research there is the analysis of phonemes’ syntagmatics and paradigmatics as well as the survey of the word stress realizations and the peculiarities of Ukrainian intonation as contrasted to German.

The phonetical and phonological peculiar features of sound system and structural types of syllables in Ukrainian are also analyzed. Besides, Ukrainian word stress and intonation are studied as well as the phonetic realization of Aesop’s fable “The Sun and the Wind”.

The research has been focused on the functioning of phonemes in the strong and weak position, in stressed and unstressed syllables. The typological discrepancies on the segmental and suprasegmental levels have been made distinct. The peculiarities of transcribing and transliterating Ukrainian texts in German have also been studied. The following conclusions have been arrived at. Ukrainian intonation differs from German intonation by the melody of interrogative sentences.

The most relevant words in the utterance, the so-called semantic centres, are tonically realized at the highest pitch level with the subsequent fall, the intensity is maximum. The semantic centre in the Ukrainian texts under investigation is in the final part of the utterances, while in spontaneous speech the position of the centre may vary.
