The article deals with the problem of rendering emotive units in Belles-lettres translation. The fiction text as an object of translation analysis is considered; the role of emotive units in fiction is established; the translation operations employed to render emotive units of Agatha Christie’s “The Mysterious Mr. Quin” from English into Chinese, Russian and Ukrainian languages are regarded; quantitative indicators of obtained results are justified and their linguistic interpretation is made.

The article is devoted to the specificity of translating scientific and technical discourse from English into Ukrainian in terms of communicative-functional and linguistic approaches. The translator’s goal is to produce a target text that would convey the same information as conveyed by the ST; the amount of the communicatively relevant information in the TT must be the same as in the ST. The results of the paper discover that the implementation of the strategy of communicatively equivalent translation determines the use of certain tactics that come down to a set of translation operations.

Key words: political discourse, automatic translation, online machine translation systems, machine translation quality assessment.

The article is focused on peculiarities of English and Chinese political discourse translation into Ukrainian. The advantages and disadvantages of machine translation are described on the basis of linguistic analysis of online Google Translate and M-Translate systems. The reasons of errors in translation are identified and the need of post-correction to improve the quality of translation is wanted.

In Linguistics the terms model and modelling have a vast array of meanings, which depends on the purpose and the object, and the type of the scientific research. The article is dedicated to the investigation of a special procedure of semantic processes modelling, deducing and substantiating the notion “evolutional semantic model”, the content and operational opportunities of which differ drastically from the essence and purpose of the known from the scientific literature phenomenon of the same name. In the proposed research this variety of modelling is oriented towards the description of the dynamics of the legal terms content loading, the estimation of possible vectors of the semantic evolution on the way of its terminalization/determinalization. The evolutional model of semantics has here as its basis the succession of sememes or series of sememes, the order of which is determined with accounting of a number of parameters. The typical schemes of the meaning development, illustrated by the succession of sememes, are considered to be the models of semantic laws (evolutional semantic models = EMS). Their function is the explanation of the mechanism and the order of the stages of the semantic evolution of the system of the words which sprung from one root on the way of its legal specialization, and, therefore, the proposed in the paper experience of semantic laws modelling differs from the expertise of the “catalogue of semantic derivations”, proposed by H. A. Zaliznjak, which doesn’t have as its purpose the explanation of meaning displacements, and from the notion of semantic derivation, models of derivation, dynamic models, worked out by O. V. Paducheva, which also only state such a displacement, without proving its reality.

The article is dedicated to rendering English variants of the terms that deal with educational issues encountered in UNESCO documents into the Chinese language. The characteristics and general classifications of terms are given. Classifications for furtherer study of legal terms are singled out. It is established that the main difficulty in translating English terms into the Chinese language is the difference in graphic form of the words and cultural features. The most frequent way of translating English legal terms that deal with educational issues into the Chinese language is outlined.

The article reveals the principal notions of focalization, its functions and features (emphasis and contrast) and their influence on transforming the model of the prosodic structure of the actual division of the utterance.

Most frequently, focalization of a text fragment is prosodically expressed with a high register and extension of the tonal range, a raised loudness and a distinct pronunciation.

It is established that one of the most well-known factors of the transformation of the prototype prosodic model is the listener’s focus on the most important aspects of the message, the conveyance of the semantic interaction of the message’s specific aspects. Focalization is interwoven with the both possible manifestations of this function: logical stress (in case of the opposition of words) or emphatic stress is implemented by its means. Regarding the changes in the tone direction, it should be noted that this tonal feature does not participate directly in forming an intonation model of the discourse’s focalized structures. It has been observed that there exists a certain modification of the tonal contour formed under the influence of the illocutionary and phase factors and certain types of the subjective-modal meanings.

The article is devoted to the study of the interrogative communicative semantics of structurally non-interrogative sentences. Some possible means enabling the reproduction of interrogative communicative implementation while translating grammatically non-interrogative sentences (statements) from Ukrainian into English / Chinese within the context of official academic correspondence are analysed. The type of sentences which are structurally non-interrogative and imply interrogation against the background of general conflict-free diplomacy-oriented interaction is specified; some linguistic differentiating characteristics of translation within the language pairs “Ukrainian ↔ English” and “Ukrainian ↔ Chinese” are substantiated.

The article describes the phenomenon of phonological adaptation and establishes processes of adapting English loanwords at the phonological level in the systems of Ukrainian and Turkish consonants. A common process is substitution. In the Turkish language, in contrast to the Ukrainian one, there are phenomena of deletion and epenthsis. Also, in Turkish there can be more than one process of adaptation in the phonological segment, which requires several phonological changes.

Key words: legal discourse, linguistic features, translation operations.

The article is devoted to the study of linguistic features of Chinese legal discourse and its variant in English and Ukrainian. The work presents genre typologically common features of legal discourse based on non-closely related languages: Chinese, English, Ukrainian; specific linguistic characteristics of Chinese legal discourse are studied; translation operations of the text under analysis — the Criminal Code of the People’s Republic of China — are examined and the pecularities of its presentation in English and Ukrainian languages are read.

Key words: subjective modality, semantics, children’s literature, linguistic means.

Linguistic means actualizing deontical, alethical, axiological and epistemical modality in children’s literature are researched in the article. It’s been proved that linguistic means of modal semantics refer to the effective instruments influencing the evolutionary process of child’s cognitive development. This aim is reached by the following means used by the author: lexical and grammatical forms (nonstandard syntactic structures, attitudinal lexemes), phonetic forms (phrase intonation variability due to inversion and graphical means), stylistic figures exploitation (metaphors, epithets, comparisons) that present the functional field of subjective modality semantics.
