SUMMARY

The article presents a comprehensive analysis of translation strategies in Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel “Maus: A Survivor’s Tale”, taking into account its multimodal nature and polyphonic semiotics. The graphic novel is viewed as a syncretic genre combining verbal and visual codes, which necessitates the application of an intersemiotic approach to translation. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between text and image, as well as to the role of typography, font features, capitalization, and page layout in the construction of meaning. The aim of the study is to identify, systematize, and analyze translation strategies in the Ukrainian translation of the novel. The research outlines the specific features of translation strategies, examines linguistic transformations, and determines the influence of the visual code on translation decisions. It is established that the translation combines strategies of communicative, functional equivalence, domestication, and foreignization, implemented through lexico-grammatical transformations. Special attention is given to the rendering of narrative polyphony, irony, and stylistic features of characters’ speech, including partial syntactic stylization. The significance of visual elements as an essential semiotic component influencing translation choices is substantiated. It is concluded that translating a graphic novel is an integrated process combining interlingual and intersemiotic transformations, ensuring the adequate representation of cultural and historical meanings in the Ukrainian context.

Key words: translation, graphic novel, strategy, transformation, multimodality.

SUMMARY

The article is devoted to comprehensive analysis of adaptation as a dominant translation strategy and its role in activating the cultural component in recipients’ consciousness. The object of the study is English and Ukrainian language animated discourse. Animated discourse is studied in its dichotomous correlation with cinematic discourse, with their common and distinctive features. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the pragmatic aspect of animated discourse, patterns of activating background knowledge and the reception of culturally marked meanings in the process of recipient’s interaction with animated text. The study identifies the specific features of adaptation and its compensatory strategies, which contribute to the representation of national identity and stereotyping of cultural models. General translation tendencies are inherent in animated films among which the orientation toward achieving pragmatic equivalence through partial reduction of local linguocultural features. The peculiarities of adaptation of charactonyms in translation are considered as a key element of adaptation. Furthermore, the main features of speech stylization are analyzed as means of compensating for wordplay and puns through the using of criminal slang. The study also focuses of peculiarities of rendering pronunciation by means of translation strategies and transformations, as well as the roles of addition and reduction as ways of actualizing the idea of national stereotype. The functioning of expressively marked utterances and the specific features of their adaptation are also disscused. A tendency toward emotivisation is identified as one of the leading strategies in the contemporary translation of animated films.

Keywords: adaptation, animated discourse, pragmatic impact, charactonyms, speech stylization, linguocultural features.

SUMMARY

A linguistic-didactic experimental study incorporating elements of statistical analysis in the lexical-semantic dimension was conducted. The study examined how professional maritime English vocabulary is acquired by students in technical specialties. The experiment was carried out over a three-year period while students were taking a course in English for professional purposes. This approach made it possible to track the dynamics of the formation, development, and shaping of linguistic personality. The primary research method chosen for this study was the empirical method, which included content analysis, questionnaires, observation, and methods of quantitative analysis of experimental data. The author presents a structure of the portrait of the English-speaking professional personality of a student of marine technical specialty in the lexical-semantic dimension. The linguistic personality is characterized using discursive means of expression. The lexicalsemantic analysis of the English-speaking professional personality was conducted using a lexicon composed of thematic groups of lexical units. The segmentation of the dialogue text was performed by identifying semantic fields and marker words. The method of structural analysis of written works and oral presentations of a specific target group was applied. The basic definitions of the stated subject field of research were delineated. It is proposed to establish the concept of an “English-speaking professional personality” in academic discourse, defined as an individual who possesses a sufficient command of the English language to succeed in their professional field, has the relevant skills and knowledge, and is able to express their thoughts, conduct business negotiations, and handle documentation and professional correspondence in English.

Keywords: English-speaking personality, English-speaking professional personality, student of a technical specialty, portrait of a linguistic personality, lexical-semantic dimension.

SUMMARY

The article examines the cognitive and informational foundations of computer security terms, identifies their thematic groups, associated risks, and threats in the modern digital space and discursive practices across distantly related Germanic and Slavic terminological systems. A structural and semantic analysis of the information protection terminological system has been carried out, specifically covering information space architecture, national and international security (entities denoting reconnaissance and espionage activities, illegal drug trafficking, types of traps, etc.), system administration, and computer threats, considering traditional linguistic and conceptual metaphors of various types, their interaction, interpenetration, and the typology of conceptual spheres. The study reveals the ontological and pragmatic mechanisms of semantic term formation of metaphorical terms in English, Ukrainian, and Polish, defines the areas of their conceptual integration, and traces the cognitive and onomasiological foundations of terminological nomination (color, taste, sensory-perceptual, auditory, temperature, etc.). Instances of taxonomy, synonymy, and antonymy of both highly specialized and interdisciplinary metaphorical designations are established. The analysis demonstrated that the source domains for metaphorical terms include medicine, the military sphere, metals and substances, family relations, architectural metaphors, and the concept spheres of “clean-dirty” and “life-death”. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of complex metaphorical terms in view of their word-forming and semantic derivation, compatibility, and modeling based on structuralgrammatical and semantic-motivational features. The research material consisted of specialized dictionaries of information and cybersecurity in three languages, as well as English-language documents related to the field of digital information protection.

Key words: information security, terminological nomination, metaphor typology, conceptual integration, structural-grammatical model.

SUMMARY

The purpose of the article is to present the results of a study examining the manifestations of the praxeological category of incompleteness in Slavic and Chinese languages. The object of study is the methods of abbreviation in the Ukrainian and Polish languages compared with those in the Chinese language. The subject of this research is the structural specificity and functional commonality of Slavic and Chinese abbreviations. As a result of the functional, word-formation, graphic, and comparative analysis, the following conclusions are made. In the compared languages, abbreviation is one of the ways of realizing the praxeological category of incompleteness. All this determines the following functions of abbreviations in speech: the function of language evasion from verbosity in naming a holistic concept and the associated function of saving speech effort, time and writing materials; the function of cross-linguistic universalization of relevant concepts and internationally recognized systems; the function of encryption; the expressive function. Overall, there is a similarity in the methods of formation and functional identity of abbreviations. However, each language has systemic-linguistic and extralinguistic features determined by the possibilities of applying existing methods of abbreviation formation and use. A comparative study of Slavic and Chinese abbreviations reveals the problem of structuring abbreviations as words or phrases, and for some models, even sentences.

Keywords: incompleteness, praxeological category, abbreviation, acronym, linguistic universal, structure of a language, function, the Slavic languages, the Chinese language.

SUMMARY

The article provides a theoretical and methodological substantiation of a competence-based model for the formation of academic writing within the system of foreign language training of higher education students. The transformation of the role of writing under the conditions of globalization of the educational space, digitalization of science, and integration of national education systems into the international academic environment is analyzed, and its functions in the structure of professional training of future specialists are determined. The structural components of academic writing competence (linguistic, cognitive, communicative, and research) are substantiated, their content characteristics, levels of integration, and didactic principles of implementation in the educational process are defined. Methodological approaches to teaching academic writing (process-oriented, genre-based, and competence-based) are identified, and pedagogical conditions for its effective formation in a foreign language educational environment are outlined, including interdisciplinary integration, the use of digital educational technologies, the development of academic integrity, and students’ reflective autonomy. It is proved that the integration of linguistic, cognitive, communicative, and research components into a unified model ensures the systematic preparation of students for academic and professional activity in the international context and contributes to the development of strategic autonomy, argumentative thinking, critical information analysis, independent text production, and the creation of academic texts in a foreign language in accordance with international standards of academic communication.

SUMMARY

The article is devoted to the study of general typological translation aspects related to economic and legal documents within the academic sphere through the prism of profession-oriented training targeted to future translators of Chinese, English and German. The author considers the correlation of language development and methodological fundamentals of teaching/learning languages and translation within the modern global education space. The concepts “functionality of the theoretical and methodological approach to the essence of translation synergism and methodology of teaching specialized disciplines”, “synergism in Translation Studies”, “synergism in methodology of teaching specialized disciplines” have been clarified. Functionality of the theoretical and methodological approach to the essence of translation synergism and methodology of teaching specialized disciplines is determined through the prism of its component structure: worldview-philosophical, general scientific, linguistic and translatology-oriented, cognitive-communicative, didactic-methodological, activity-oriented praxeological and evaluative-reflective components. The phenomenon under study is interpreted as a multi-level, multi-component basis insuring the productive implementation of multi-vector cross-state cooperation through the high-quality work of the translator, tolerance for multiculturalism in the global framework, and adequate projection of the objective reasons for the development of science and society in the life of a modern person. Synergism in Translation Studies is associated with the coordinated interactions of various translation mechanisms facilitating adequate translation under conditions of global communicative intercultural and cross-state cooperation, translation digitalization and technologization. We interpret synergism in methodology of teaching specialized disciplines as the coordinated interaction of the training forms, methods and means targeted to would-be translators alongside its interdisciplinary determination in compliance with modern challenges and global processes taking place worldwide. Some reasons for transforming the translation paradigm in the global context have been substantiated (globalization of communicative interactions, digitalization and technologization of translation activities, re-building of the translator’s social role, interdisciplinary determination). This logic is presented as a natural response of science to the challenges of globalization processes, technological transformations and the evolution of the role of translation in the system of world communication, which involves a gradual transition from fragmentary, one-dimensional, limited approaches to an integrative, synergistic and interdisciplinary understanding of translation as a complex socio-cultural phenomenon. The author presents illustrative means of official documents which regulate economic and legal relations in the academic sphere in the XXI century (in Chinese, English, German, Ukrainian) in the spectrum of profession-oriented training of would-be translators. The perspectives of further research are seen in the study related to the grammatical component of academic documentation in the methodological context of profession-oriented training targeted to would-be translators.

SUMMARY

The article studies the processes of terminology formation in the English-language computer terminology system in the semantic aspect. A semantic analysis of the features of the formation and functioning of English-language computer terms in the context of the rapid development of information technologies was carried out. The use of the descriptive method made it possible to analyze the processes of integration into language circulation and identify the phenomenon of semantic shifts in the meanings of commonly used English-language computer terms. The main methods of terminology formation are allocated, in particular: semantic borrowings, terminologization of common language vocabulary, word composition according to the model "noun + noun". The specifics of various types of terminology, in particular multicomponent terms, abbreviations and acronyms, are described, as well as metaphorization, metonymization and lexical-semantic changes (concretization and generalization) as ways of terminology are studied. It has been revealed that in English-language computer terminology, the semantic mechanism of terminology is the leading one. Semantics ensures dynamism, adaptability of this terminology and its intelligibility for users. A conclusion is made about the prospects for further study of the Englishlanguage computer terminology system in diachrony and synchrony.

Keywords: English-language computer terminology, semantic borrowing, broadening of meaning (generalization), narrowing of meaning (concretization), specialization of meaning, adaptation of terms, semantic transparency.

SUMMARY

The article examines the specifics and main strategies of translating legal terminology in international legal texts based on the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement. The relevance of the study is determined by the growing role of international legal communication and the need to ensure accurate and adequate translation of legal documents in the context of Ukraine’s European integration. The paper considers the peculiarities of the functioning of legal terminology in the official business style and analyzes the difficulties that arise in the process of its translation, which are caused by differences in language systems and legal traditions, as well as by the specific features of legal realities in different countries. Based on the analysis of fragments of the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement, the most common translation strategies and transformations are identified, including lexical calquing, descriptive translation, concretization, generalization, transliteration, as well as grammatical transformations such as addition, omission, and transposition. Particular attention is paid to the role of context and the functional purpose of terms. The results of the study show that the use of translation transformations is an important tool for ensuring the accuracy and adequacy of rendering legal terminology in international legal documents.

Key words: legal terminology, legal translation, translation of international legal texts, translation strategies, translation transformations, calquing, descriptive translation, EU–Ukraine Association Agreement.

SUMMARY

This article deals with the definition of the grammatical status of the phrase a lot of in the Modern English language. In grammar, a phrase is traditionally understood as a combination of words that is not a primary predication structure. The question of the place of the phrase a lot of within the system of parts of speech of the English language has not been solved in anglistics until now. In this work we are making an attempt to suggest our solution of the problem. The difficulties of the definition of the grammatical status of the lexeme a lot of are closely connected with the general problem of definition of the parts of speech which remains topical since the time of Aristotle. There exist a number of grammatical classifications of Parts of Speech, based upon different criteria .The question of the criteria is decisive when one deals with classification of the words of any language into certain groups. Depending upon the criteria such groups of words can be called “lexical”, “grammatical”; “lexico-grammatical”. In our opinion the most appropriate way to find the place of a language unit in the system of the parts of speech is to analyze peculiarities of its functioning in speech using the principles of the prototype theory, which gives the possibility to take into account all content and formal characteristics of a lexeme under analysis , refer it to a certain conceptual category and in that way arrive at its place in a certain discourse – cognitive group of words, traditionally called the Parts of Speech. In the course of our analysis we came to the conclusion that semantic and formal characteristics of the lexeme lot correspond to those of the prototypical ones of the noun. Thus, the phrase a lot of constitutes a syntactic construction consisting of the noun lot, which has a quantitative meaning, its prepositional determiner (the article a) and its postpositional prepositional modifier (with the preposition of).
