SUMMARY
The article is devoted to comprehensive analysis of adaptation as a dominant translation strategy and its role in activating the cultural component in recipients’ consciousness. The object of the study is English and Ukrainian language animated discourse. Animated discourse is studied in its dichotomous correlation with cinematic discourse, with their common and distinctive features. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the pragmatic aspect of animated discourse, patterns of activating background knowledge and the reception of culturally marked meanings in the process of recipient’s interaction with animated text. The study identifies the specific features of adaptation and its compensatory strategies, which contribute to the representation of national identity and stereotyping of cultural models. General translation tendencies are inherent in animated films among which the orientation toward achieving pragmatic equivalence through partial reduction of local linguocultural features. The peculiarities of adaptation of charactonyms in translation are considered as a key element of adaptation. Furthermore, the main features of speech stylization are analyzed as means of compensating for wordplay and puns through the using of criminal slang. The study also focuses of peculiarities of rendering pronunciation by means of translation strategies and transformations, as well as the roles of addition and reduction as ways of actualizing the idea of national stereotype. The functioning of expressively marked utterances and the specific features of their adaptation are also disscused. A tendency toward emotivisation is identified as one of the leading strategies in the contemporary translation of animated films.
