SUMMARY
The article presents a comprehensive analysis of translation strategies in Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel “Maus: A Survivor’s Tale”, taking into account its multimodal nature and polyphonic semiotics. The graphic novel is viewed as a syncretic genre combining verbal and visual codes, which necessitates the application of an intersemiotic approach to translation. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between text and image, as well as to the role of typography, font features, capitalization, and page layout in the construction of meaning. The aim of the study is to identify, systematize, and analyze translation strategies in the Ukrainian translation of the novel. The research outlines the specific features of translation strategies, examines linguistic transformations, and determines the influence of the visual code on translation decisions. It is established that the translation combines strategies of communicative, functional equivalence, domestication, and foreignization, implemented through lexico-grammatical transformations. Special attention is given to the rendering of narrative polyphony, irony, and stylistic features of characters’ speech, including partial syntactic stylization. The significance of visual elements as an essential semiotic component influencing translation choices is substantiated. It is concluded that translating a graphic novel is an integrated process combining interlingual and intersemiotic transformations, ensuring the adequate representation of cultural and historical meanings in the Ukrainian context.
