SUMMARY

The article is dedicated to the study of the structural and semantic characteristics of headlines in contemporary diaspora press reportages over the last decade on the base the newspaper «The New Pathway Ukrainian News» (Toronto, Canada). The results of the analysis indicate that the most frequent type of headline is the traditional short headline which is typical for mass media. The newspaper’s authors use extended nominative single-clause sentences for paying readers' attention to the key aspects of the Ukrainian life abroad or events in Ukraine. Two-clause uncomplex headlines are productive because of their conciseness and clarity. According to the research the main types of question-based headlines are summarized which help establish an emotional connection with the topic of the reportage. Asyndetic constructions are the most commonly used among complex sentences in diaspora reportage’s headlines. The study also identified headlines which consists of two or even three sentences, however such lengthy headlines could lead to misunderstanding of the text or disinterest of it. There are other syntactic types of headlines: verbal single-clause, infinitive, exclamatory, imperative, incomplete, parcelled structures, incomplete sentences, quotes, and phraseological units. This study is designed as a foundation for further linguistic research into the issue of Ukrainian-language diaspora reportage, their structure, genre and semantic content.

Key words: diaspora, mass media, reportage, headline, singleclause sentence, two-clause sentence, complex sentence, incomplete sentence, interrogative sentences, exclamation sentence, direct address, direct speech, phraseological units.

SUMMARY

The article explores linguistic variation as an important aspect of modern sociolinguistics, in particular through the prism of the song «Let's Call the Whole Thing Off» by the Gershwin brothers. The authors point out that language differences not only identify a speaker or a social group, but also reflect cultural and social tensions. The article emphasizes the importance of perceiving these variations as a source of understanding rather than disagreement. An analysis of the phonetic and prosodic differences in the lyrics demonstrates how differences in word pronunciation can serve as a basis for mutual enrichment and communication. In addition, the article analyzes the cultural aspects of linguistic variation, pointing out that accents not only reflect linguistic diversity but also indicate the existence of cultural and social boundaries. Particular attention is paid to the issue of tolerance to linguistic diversity, as at the end of the song the characters decide «Let's call the whole thing off», which symbolizes acceptance and compromise. The article emphasizes that linguistic differences can be perceived with humor and tolerance, serving as a tool for cultural exchange. The study of patterns of linguistic variation emphasizes their dynamic nature, which is determined by social, cultural and historical factors. Patterns manifested in phonetic variations can vary depending on geographic location, social groups, and cultural influences. According to scientists, such patterns are not static but are subject to change under the influence of language mobility and globalization. They are becoming markers of social identity and cultural heritage, while serving to unite rather than divide. The authors of the article point out that the determination and stratification of language variants deepen the understanding of linguistic variation in the context of social structures. Researchers such as Basil Bernstein and Joshua Fishman emphasize that language patterns reflect cultural and ethnic identities, determining how social practices shape linguistic behavior. In this context, the article not only illustrates how linguistic variations can serve as a source of communication, but also emphasizes the importance of tolerance in today's globalized society, where diversity is a value rather than an obstacle to understanding.

Key words: sociolinguistics, communication, language variation, tolerance, linguistic patterns, phonetic differences, cultural identity, linguo-cultural features.

SUMMARY

In today’s globalized and digital society, modern communication combines various aspects within a single multimodal landscape. Foreign language teaching should consider these peculiarities to reflect real-world communication, promote purposeful language learning, accommodate a variety of learning styles, and make language acquisition more interesting and efficient. The article aims to investigate and determine successful multimodal teaching approaches and strategies that educators may use to improve foreign language teaching. For this purpose, important theoretical frameworks in language teaching that facilitate multimodal learning are studied. The potential of utilizing several multimodal activities from multimodal text analysis, educational videos, projects using collaboration or blogging, digital storytelling, multimedia (research) presentations, role-playing and drama, іnteractive museum projects/interactive career guidance quest-tour, multimodal vocabulary journals, interactive learning modules to online learning platforms and interactive textbooks is described. It is concluded that multimodal techniques are effective when they encourage learners to connect actively with the language in meaningful ways by using several senses and communication types. Multimodal strategies in foreign language instruction help create a more holistic and immersive learning environment, which is conducive to better comprehension and retention, as well as the development of creativity, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork, along with other essential 21st-century skills.

Key words: multimodal teaching approaches, meaningful language learning, language acquisition, active engagement.

SUMMARY

The aim of this work is to mark the most significant stages of experimental phonetics development in Ukraine. The researches in phonetics in Ukraine was intended to meet the needs of the society: mastering a foreign language where adequate pronunciation contributes to successful communication. This urgency determined the necessity of theoretical studies of phonetic structure of a foreign language in comparison with the mother tongue, caused the necessity of systematic comparative scientific investigations of phonetic structure of the languages under investigation. At the beginning of the 20th century the phonetic investigations in Ukraine were based on examining the speech sounds articulation using the experimental methods of palatograms, linguagrams and photography; the purpose was to obtain a detailed and exact data of position of the speech organs when producing speech sounds. The first laboratory of experimental phonetics was organised by A. I. Tomson, a professor of Odessa University in 1912. A very important period of linguistic research of sounding speech took place in Ukraine in 1950s–60s. The laboratories of experimental phonetics were organized in Odesa and Kyiv (Shevchenko Kiev National University, at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Odessa National University). Nowadays global Internet communication is one of primary social needs and thus the quality of oral messages is to meet the requirement. Despite the presence of a certain range of problems, the development of computer technologies in human activities makes a significant contribution to the process of oral speech generating and analysis.

Key words: experimental phonetics, methods and techniques, oral communication.

SUMMARY

The article has been dedicated to the description of the considerable influence of cognitive linguistics on the urbanonyms on the examples of the cities Kyiv and Vilnius. The total amount of the analyzed street names is 60 (40 Ukrainian and 20 Lithuanian). The problem of the research is urgent taking into consideration the street naming and renaming processes as the indicators of the fatal changes in the countries; is it possible to view the street names as imprints of people’s cultural memory; how the collective memory works; how the nation’s experience influences; is phenomenology the backbone of the street naming/renaming processes. This research is an attempt to analyze phenomenology and apply the prototype theory within the scope of the street naming or renaming processes in Kyiv and Vilnius, the countries with the same past and the different ways out the USSR. It is investigated how people’s memory operates and how the national awareness and cognitive processes can change the course of the events. The phenomenology is directly concerned with humans’ cognitive process which in its turn has the particular consequences to the nation and the state building. The research definitely has perspectives for the future. The street names are insufficiently explored and are not debated to the full extent. The main purpose is to observe how the street titles are categorized in mind and what are the reasons of their renaming, involving the mutual historical background as the parts of the USSR. Nevertheless, the phenomenon of such an enormous time gap in European route between Kyiv and Vilnius can be explained with the help of national cognition and its development.

Key words: urbanonyms, prototype theory, street naming/renaming processes, phenomenology.

SUMMARY

The principle of historicism is a leading ontological component of the comparative-historical method. It played a key role in the emergence and development of this method. Similarities between languages had long been noticed by scholars, but they were primarily interpreted from a static perspective using the apparatus of universal grammar. The idea of a genetic relationship between certain languages had also been expressed, but for centuries it did not become dominant. A certain impetus that marked the starting point for the emergence of the comparative-historical method was the discovery of Sanskrit by Europeans. G.-L. Cooeurdoux, W. Jones, and other 18th-century researchers emphasized that Sanskrit, Ancient Greek, Latin, and the Germanic, Celtic, and Iranian languages belong to a single linguistic family and originate from a common source. Comparative linguistics in the first quarter of the 19th century represented a significant advancement compared to earlier linguisticgenetic constructions. For 17th- and 18th-century linguists, linguistic material was illustrative in nature, and facts were interpreted arbitrarily. Additionally, lexical units, which are the least stable, were at the forefront. Comparative linguistics, however, bases historical comparison of languages on their grammatical and phonetic structures, and in lexicon, appeals to archaic (primary) layers. Early comparativists identified identical functional morphemes in related (Indo-European) languages (F. Bopp), formulated the principle of regular phonetic correspondences in cognate words and forms of these languages, and on this basis reconstructed historical phonetic laws (R. Rask, J. Grimm, A. Chr. Vostokov). They also reconstructed the common lexical stock of Indo-European languages (R. Rask, J. Grimm). All language changes were interpreted as regular. This created a favorable basis for the refinement of the comparativehistorical method in comparative linguistics in the 1870s–1930s.

Key words: comparative-historical method, comparative linguistics, principle of historicism, regularity of language changes.

SUMMARY

The paper deals with the results of etymological analysis of a group of lexemes in the vocabulary of Eastern and Western (Polish) Slavonic languages. The aims of this study: а) to give the etymological explanation of several Slavonic lexemes, which hitherto have not been the object of linguistic analysis or examined as «not entirely clear» in the special literature; b) to clarify the etymological relations and the structure of the words which have already got a preliminary assessment in the investigations of the paper author predecessors. The treatment of these words enables not only to clarify their genetic relations to the cognates and determine the details of their structure, but also substantiate their Proto-Slavonic age, having supposed the areal limitation of corresponding Proto-Slavonic prototypes. It is about the following words: *balǫgъ or *bololǫgъ (along with Lith. Láng-a-balė, where inversion of the components is presented), *xomila, *obxobьje, *termъkъ or *tьrmъkъ, *tyr(ʼ)a, *vorma (the dialectal morphological innovation to the original *verma), *vьrgo-lykъ. Proto-Slav. *xomila, *termъkъ, *tyr(ʼ)a, evidently, belonged to the terminological (hunting, fishing and agricultural) vocabulary.

Key words: etymology, comparative-historical method, prototype, derivative, Slavonic languages.

SUMMARY

Scientific research is devoted to a critical review of the reproduction of the categories of space and time in the film version of J.K. Rowling's novel "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". The comparative analysis of verbal and non-verbal means of creating categories of time and space in the film narrative was carried out by creating a sample of data from film scripts (in English and Ukrainian languages) from a selected episode of the film. The paper examines the issue of regularities in the use of words and phrases, as well as gestures, facial expressions, noises, sounds, and musical accompaniment to depict time and space in a film narrative based on films of the fantasy genre (on the example of an adventure fantasy film about Harry Potter). The main cases of using verbal and non-verbal means are characterized (special attention is paid to chronemics and proxemics). The research material was: the film adaptation of the fourth book of adventures about the little wizard by J.K. Rowling "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" in the original language (director - M. Newell, 2005) and the Ukrainian dubbing of this film by the studio "Так Треба Продакшн" to order vod-platform sweet.tv in 2020. As a result of the research, it was established that, firstly, the film narrative has its own specific features that distinguish it from the classical narrative; secondly, that both verbal and non-verbal means of creating categories of space and time have a huge impact on the construction of the entire film in general.

Key words: narrative, film narrative, verbal means, non-verbal means, discourse, chronemics and proxemics.
