SUMMARY

Scientific research is devoted to a critical review of the reproduction of the categories of space and time in the film version of J.K. Rowling's novel "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". The comparative analysis of verbal and non-verbal means of creating categories of time and space in the film narrative was carried out by creating a sample of data from film scripts (in English and Ukrainian languages) from a selected episode of the film. The paper examines the issue of regularities in the use of words and phrases, as well as gestures, facial expressions, noises, sounds, and musical accompaniment to depict time and space in a film narrative based on films of the fantasy genre (on the example of an adventure fantasy film about Harry Potter). The main cases of using verbal and non-verbal means are characterized (special attention is paid to chronemics and proxemics). The research material was: the film adaptation of the fourth book of adventures about the little wizard by J.K. Rowling "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" in the original language (director - M. Newell, 2005) and the Ukrainian dubbing of this film by the studio "Так Треба Продакшн" to order vod-platform sweet.tv in 2020. As a result of the research, it was established that, firstly, the film narrative has its own specific features that distinguish it from the classical narrative; secondly, that both verbal and non-verbal means of creating categories of space and time have a huge impact on the construction of the entire film in general.

Key words: narrative, film narrative, verbal means, non-verbal means, discourse, chronemics and proxemics.

SUMMARY

The purpose of the study is to identify and describe the lexical and grammatical transformations during the translation of Ding Ling’s story «Sophie’s Diary» from Chinese into Ukrainian. To achieve the goal, the following research methods were used: the descriptive method applied to the analysis of the theoretical foundations of translation transformations, various methods of translation transformations (in the process of translating passages of artistic style text), methods of linguistic observation (detection of changes in the structures of different levels of the original texts and its translation respondent) and research on the compatibility of language units, as well as typological (comparison of language units of the original and translation) and statistical (to analyze the prevalence of the use of certain classes and types of translation transformations) methods. The translation of the text of the artistic style was analyzed, which made it possible to identify and investigate the ways and methods of reproducing linguistic phenomena of the Chinese language in Ukrainian. As a result, it was found that most grammatical and lexical transformations are based on differences in language structures. When translating, it is necessary to take into account the differences in the grammatical and lexical systems of the two languages but try to achieve adequacy while preserving the form of the original text.

SUMMARY

The issue of the relationship between the language of fiction and dialect speech is permanently relevant in linguistic studies. Among the 15 Ukrainian dialects, writers most often use Hutsul dialect units, mainly for the realization of nominative-cognitive and expressive function, individualization of characters, and truthfulness of sketches (in particular, those that describe the life of Hutsuls, landscape, flora, and fauna of the Carpathians, etc.), as it adds authenticity to ethnographic inserts and creates artistic time-space. The article analyzes the Hutsul dialect units characteristic for the speech of the residents of village Zamagora of the Verkhovyna district of Ivano-Frankivsk region and verbalized by Liuba-Paraskeviia Strynadiuk in her collection of prose works «Give a note “la”. Hutsul etudes». The author is a native of this region, which is essential from the point of view of the unerring and organic use of dialectics in the artistic text. In the course of the research, regional lexical elements used in the texts have been identified, selected, and involved in the analysis. The semantics of the attested dialecticisms is used as the basis for the classification of the dialect words accordingly. The study examines the groups of dialect vocabulary that are the most representative and, therefore, create an ethno-cultural background of the story. The research is conducted using traditional lexicological research methods: general sampling (used to form the corpus of Hutsulisms) and descriptive method, which is used for structuring and lexical-semantic analysis of the recorded nomens. The analyzed text represents the type of literary-dialectal diglossia, when Hutsul wordslocalisms are used both in the author’s language and the characters' speech, although there are few dialogues in the texts. This is natural considering the writer’s chosen strategy of conducting the «I»-narrative type of story, where the writer unwittingly becomes the heroine of the ministories (etudes) she tells about.

SUMMARY

This research examines the relationship between the translated text and peritextual genres in the Ukrainian-language version of Paul Ekman’s popular science publication «Telling Lies». The research focuses on microgenres located in pre-position to the main text (dedication, dicta, acknowledgments) and in post-position (alphabetical index, appendix, bibliography). The peritextual representations are studied regarding their correlation and influence on the reader's reception. Particular attention is paid to the explicit connection between the peritextual superstructures, which is traced to the example of the figure of Erving Hoffmann, who appears in the dedication, the section with quotations, and the acknowledgments. Emphasis is placed on the complexity of analyzing paratext as a phenomenon of a heterogeneous nature that requires careful study. The article highlights Keith Harvey's multidimensional concept of «bindings», which, among other things, involves the interaction of the main text and the components of the peritextual space. Based on the comparison of the original and the target language text, certain modifications of the elements of peritextual forms are revealed, which are caused by the peculiarities of translation reproduction, vision, and interpretation. A special place is given to two types of comments in the publication, created by the author and editor of the Ukrainian translation of the book, which interact with the text and peritext (commenting on the illustrative material). By analyzing the visual narratives of the book covers of the original edition and the translated version, comparing the text configuration, color scheme, and general non-verbal representation, the article reveals the fundamental changes that visual elements undergo when published in Ukrainian. The role of psychological manipulation aimed at consumer consciousness, which remains common to both versions of the covers, is emphasized. The study's results contribute to a better understanding of the influence of peritextual elements on the perception and interpretation of the text, as well as the importance of adapting the cover to the target audience and cultural contexts.

SUMMARY

The article is devoted to the study of the role and influence of mythological names in the titles of English films on the audience's perception and understanding of the content. The importance and influence of mythological names on the cultural context are analysed. The ways in which mythological elements influence mass culture are studied. The current trends in the reinterpretation of mythological names in contemporary cinematic works are investigated. Mythological names are an important part of the cultures of different nations. They reflect the unique mythology, traditions and values of these peoples. Mythological names in English films are used to create an atmosphere, convey ideas and attract the audience's attention. In this context, several types of mythological names can be distinguished, such as the names of gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines, monsters and creatures, and places and objects. The analysis of the use of mythological names in film titles reveals their diversity and importance in creating special atmosphere and expressing ideas. Modern trends in the reinterpretation of mythological names are reproduced in unusual contexts, combined with modern elements and expand their meaning: firstly, they can contribute to the popularisation of mythology among modern audiences; secondly, these trends can contribute to the development of new forms of mythology, when mythological names are combined with modern elements, they can create new mythological mixes that reflect the values and problems of modern society; thirdly, these trends can lead to more diverse and inclusive images in popular culture. When mythological names are assigned to characters from different cultures, it can help to show that mythology is part of different cultures and that it can be used to create diverse and inclusive images. Mythological names turn out to be not only an in-depth layer of cultural heritage, but also a key tool for creating engaging narratives that can impress and leave a mark in the world of contemporary mass culture.

SUMMARY

The article reveals cultural and national character of phrasemics of Chinese and Ukrainian languages as it is determined by both linguistic and extra linguistic factors. The relevance of the problem is related to the peculiarities of the structure of phraseological units and their meaning, which deeply reflect the national perception and understanding of the world by speakers of a particular culture, often leading to a lack of understanding of this specific character by speakers of other languages. The history of the development of linguistic typology highlights the necessity of using phraseological material to create the most comprehensive typological model of a language. The results of the research have revealed that the development of contemporary cognitive studies facilitate the process of investigating phrasemes taking into account the advanced researches in this field. This entails exploring them not solely as artifacts of national and cultural heritage but also as a valuable source for the cognitive processes understanding that leads to the phenomenon of phraseologization. The aim of the present study is to identify the ethnocultural peculiarities of Ukrainian and Chinese phrases by analyzing their structural organization and determining the mechanism of semantic content in human discourse. Ethic and cultural peculiarity of Chinese phrases differs much from that of the Ukrainian language. It is determined by two factors structural and semantic. The first is connected with the symmetry of phrases. Symmetry and pronunciation have special position in Chinese phrasemics structure. The second factor is connected to deeper understanding of the conceptual sphere of both languages in focus.

SUMMARY

This article deals with the study of the tactics of translation of metonymy-grounded English language units into the Ukrainian language in literary discourse. The English-language novel «Revenge Wears Prada» by L. Weisbereger was chosen as the case study for this research. The choice is justified by the presence of a large number of metony-grounded language units in the original text of the novel, which is an element of L. Weisberger's authorial style. Since the American writer L. Weisberger's novel «Revenge Wears Prada» has not translated into Ukrainian, this paper employs the method of logical modeling aimed at achieving the goal of describing translation actions and operations that should be applied for adequate translation of metonymy-grounded linguistic units functioning in the chosen literary work. Metonymy is viewed in this work as a linguocognitive phenomenon – a cognitive process in which one conceptual entity provides mental access to another conceptual entity within one cognitive structure – an idealized cognitive model (ICM). An idealized cognitive model is an encyclopedic, flexible, idiosyncratic structure of knowledge representation that encompasses the cultural knowledge of native speakers, their subjective views on the concept and is not limited to the «real world». In the course of metonymic mapping within the ICM, the naming of a part of the ICM is transferred to the naming of another part or the proper name of the concept. Metonymic expressions are presented as a way of appealing to cognitive metonymy. The work includes the achievements by M. Brdar and R. Brdar-Zhabo, who developed a typology of translation tactics of (non)metonymized language units. In order to preserve the intention of the author, the proposed translation equivalents should, if possible, preserve the metonymic connection. In this case, cognate (35% of cases) or non-cognate (28% of cases) metonymic expressions in the target language may be involved. If it is impossible to preserve it, a descriptive translation (35%) is recommended, which, however, leads to demetonymization.

Key words: metonymy, translation tactics, cognate / non-cognate metonymic expressions, descriptive translation, demetonymization, literary discourse.

SUMMARY

The article is dedicated to the peculiarities of the functioning of phraseological units of color nominations in modern advertising Internet discourse. The problem of studying the content and symbolism of colors through the prism of national cultural values acquires particular importance in the context of continuous integration both in the field of linguistic knowledge and in the field of intercultural communication, which in fact testifies to the relevance of scientific research. The interest in the study of color names can be explained by the fact that the symbolism of color names for each nation reflects in some way a unique worldview, a linguistic image of the world. Color names can reflect national history, the brightest historical periods. The study of color symbolism is also carried out in fields of knowledge such as psychology, linguistics, and ethnolinguistics. Since the use of color names reflects the traditions and history of a particular ethnic group, and also depends on the geographical location, climatic conditions, etc. Most phraseological units of color names can be represented by phrases that are formed according to patterns typical of advertising texts. The morphological peculiarity of the phraseological units of color designations in the Anglo-American advertising Internet discourse is that they are expressed by nouns and adjectives as well as by other linguistic parts. As a result of comparing the frequency of the use of simple and complex phraseological units of color names in English-language advertising texts, it was found that the highest frequency of the function of complex phraseological units of color names is observed in the field of cosmetics and the lowest in the field of clothing advertising.

Key words: advertising Internet discourse, color symbolism, intercultural communication, phraseological units.

SUMMARY

In the focus of the article there is the problem of gender neutralization phenomenon in the modern English language in general and in contemporary English Internet discourse in particular. The changes in the English language in diachrony are studied and interpreted in close connection with the review of «political correctness» and general tendency of euphemizing acute issues in the social life. The research was chiefly performed on the basis of the British National Corpus and the samples of English Internet discourse with the total amount of the analyzed texts about 4000. Therefore, the findings of the research can be fully regarded as trust-worthy and highly informative. The results have proved the slow-down in the process of replacing gender marked job titles by gender-neutral words. The research has perspectives for the future. The perspective may be seen in employing other corpora. The chief purpose is to prevent any form of linguistic bias that may occur in Internet discourse. The comparative analysis of these processes in British, American, Australian and Canadian English might also be noteworthy. Nevertheless, the diversity and profoundness of the researches in this field have proved the urgency of the topic involved.

Key words: gender neutralization, job titles, English Internet discourse, political correctness, corpus.
