SUMMARY
The article is devoted to the functional features of phraseological units in Ivan Bagryany’s novel ‘The Garden of Gethsemane’. It provides an overview of the theoretical foundations of Ukrainian phraseology studies; focuses on the semantics and expressiveness of Ukrainian phraseological units used by the author of the novel; analyses phraseological means of expressing fear in the novel; and characterises the functions of phraseological units in the novel.
The study of phraseological units is an exploration of the treasure trove of national connotations, as well as the specifics of the reflection of the national mentality in phraseology, which is one of the understudied problems of Ukrainian linguistics.
Key words: Ukrainian phraseology, phraseological unit, stylistics, semantics, expression.
