SUMMARY

The abstracted scientific research is devoted to a comparative analysis of the semantics of coloratives in Swiss linguistic culture of the first half of the 20th century. The relevance of the study is determined by the lacunae of special works on the proposed issues. The illustrative base is topical original everyday stories digitized within the framework of the Gutenberg project. An experimental card index of 76 language units has been compiled. Two types of colors and their shades are conditionally distinguished: “universal” and “special.” “Universal” colors and their shades are found in both analyzed works, “special” ones in one or the other work. The list of “universal” colors is blue, red, black, “universal” shades of colors are light, blond, pale, dark. A matrix of colorants and their classification according to pragmatic criteria is proposed. It is established that Lisa Wenger's “special” colors are identical to yellow, “special” shades of colors are sunny, golden, bloody, dark red. Ernst Zahn prefers white, reddish, reddish, terracotta, blushing, green, brown, velvety brown, chestnut, tan, multi-colored, gray, steel, purple colors and shades. The semantics of coloratives is polysemic, varying from neutral through positive, negative, combined to indefinite, informing about a person's life experience, their values, appearance, emotional sphere, behavior, etc. according to the formulas “here and now”, “there and then”, “ur own – alien”, “European – non-European”. The linguistic features of coloratives are determined, parallelism and asymmetry of the phenomenon are delimited, and the idea of the semantic possibilities of coloratives in human speech activity in general and creative personality in particular is confirmed.

Key words: color, shade of color, colorative, semantics, narrative, semantics of colorative.
