SUMMARY
The article is dedicated to the study of the structural and semantic characteristics of headlines in contemporary diaspora press reportages over the last decade on the base the newspaper «The New Pathway Ukrainian News» (Toronto, Canada). The results of the analysis indicate that the most frequent type of headline is the traditional short headline which is typical for mass media. The newspaper’s authors use extended nominative single-clause sentences for paying readers' attention to the key aspects of the Ukrainian life abroad or events in Ukraine. Two-clause uncomplex headlines are productive because of their conciseness and clarity. According to the research the main types of question-based headlines are summarized which help establish an emotional connection with the topic of the reportage. Asyndetic constructions are the most commonly used among complex sentences in diaspora reportage’s headlines. The study also identified headlines which consists of two or even three sentences, however such lengthy headlines could lead to misunderstanding of the text or disinterest of it. There are other syntactic types of headlines: verbal single-clause, infinitive, exclamatory, imperative, incomplete, parcelled structures, incomplete sentences, quotes, and phraseological units. This study is designed as a foundation for further linguistic research into the issue of Ukrainian-language diaspora reportage, their structure, genre and semantic content.
Key words: diaspora, mass media, reportage, headline, singleclause sentence, two-clause sentence, complex sentence, incomplete sentence, interrogative sentences, exclamation sentence, direct address, direct speech, phraseological units.
